Read extracts from SAP's Data Retention Tool (DaRT)

The Data Retention Tool is an SAP module that enables you to extract the data that needs to be made available for tax auditing purposes. There are already 433 tables with a total of 6.206 fields preconfigured. In addition, DaRT can be expanded to include further tables. DaRT Reader is a desktop application for reading, validating and writing extracts to databases or files independently of an SAP system.

Tax departments: Do you have extracts from old SAP systems or releases and are you unable to read these extracts? Are you responsible for archiving tax-relevant data yourself and would you like to be able to read and validate the archived data quickly? Use the DaRT Reader to quickly see which data is contained in an extract and to export any tables from the extract as a CSV. Provide tax auditors with data from any SAP systems that have already been decommissioned and analyse the data that the tax auditor may also request in your analysis software.

Data Scientists: Are you looking for a secure, convenient way to acquire extensive tax-relevant data from your client? Are your customers reluctant to install their own extractors or is setting up extractors time-consuming? Then simply use the SAP Data Retention Tool. This interface already provides you with approx. 433 tables with a total of 6.206 fields. Your customers can comfortably use a graphical interface developed by SAP to extract the data. Using the DaRT Reader, you can write the files extracted by the customer to a relational database with a simple command and then analyse the data.

...

Software developers: Do you want to develop a tax compliance product and extract tax-relevant data for further processing by your software product without major integration effort? DaRT Reader reads DaRT extracts quickly and reliably into any relational database that implements a JDBC driver. Use DaRT Reader to check the checksums contained in the DaRT extract. Use DaRT Reader either as a client to bring data from the customer to you or run DaRT Reader server side.

How does DaRT Reader work?

Listing segments
Segment overview

DaRT Reader is a desktop application that can be installed on both Windows and Mac OS X. It can be run either through a graphical user interface or via the command line. DaRT Reader reads a DaRT extract which consists of several files - the directory file and at least one other file. The name of the directory file has the extension _DR by default and contains information about the extract. The other files contain the actual data and have a file name with a consecutive number by default. With DaRT Reader you can obtain information about the extract. For example, you can see which user created the extract and which fiscal year the extract refers to. You can also see which tables (also called segments) the extract contains and for each table you can see the number of data records and a description of the fields. DaRT extracts contain information about the size of the extract files, as well as checksums relating to individual tables. DaRT Reader allows you to check these checksums to ensure that the data in the extract has not been altered or lost in transit or during extraction. You can write the data to a relational database or export it as a CSV file in order to analyse the data or make it available to authorised groups of people, such as tax auditors. Data remains on your premises except for some meta data that is sent to the DaRT Reader server for licensing purposes.
